Former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, says he has no regrets backing Bola Tinubu over Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Ortom said his decision was guided by the interests of his people, not personal ambition.

“I did not hide it. I have no regret,” Ortom said, referring to his role in the G5 — a group of five PDP governors who openly rejected Atiku’s candidacy and endorsed Tinubu of the APC.

He dismissed accusations of betrayal, saying, “Which betrayal? Pursuing my interest and the interest of my people? Politics is about doing what your people want.”

Ortom also questioned the logic of Atiku, a northerner, contesting to succeed another northerner, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who had completed two terms in office.
On Atiku’s recent political moves, Ortom said he wasn’t surprised by the former vice president’s withdrawal from the PDP, adding that he has no plans to leave the party himself.
He also dismissed the new opposition coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), backed by former Senate President David Mark and ex-governor Gabriel Suswam, calling it unsustainable.
“For me and those I lead, we remain in the PDP. I am the leader of the PDP in Benue State and a member of the Board of Trustees,” Ortom said.
