Passengers Get Over N1bn Refund From Nigerian Airlines In Three Months

Between April and June 2025, local airlines in Nigeria refunded more than one billion naira to air travellers, according to fresh data from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The refunds followed growing complaints about flight disruptions and service failures.

The refunds were made to passengers who had experienced delays, cancellations, or changes in their flight schedules across several domestic routes. A total of 5,285 people received their money back within the three-month period.

The refunds were processed by domestic airlines operating in Nigeria. The NCAA, which regulates aviation activities, did not name the airlines involved, but the refunds cut across multiple carriers serving different parts of the country.

The payments were made as part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger welfare and ensure airlines comply with aviation rules. The NCAA has been monitoring the operations of local airlines more closely after rising complaints from travellers in recent months.

The information was shared by the NCAA through its official communication channels. The agency confirmed the total amount refunded was ₦1,038,505,680.80 and stated that this was in line with regulations that protect the rights of passengers.

Passengers who received refunds had filed claims with the airlines or the NCAA after facing issues such as overbooking, last-minute cancellations, or delays lasting several hours. These issues have been a frequent source of frustration for many travellers.

The refunds come amid increased calls for better regulation of the aviation sector. Travellers have demanded more accountability from airlines, and consumer protection groups have urged the NCAA to enforce stricter penalties on airlines that fail to meet basic service obligations.

Flight disruptions remain common across Nigeria’s aviation landscape, especially during peak travel seasons. Bad weather, technical issues, and poor planning have often been blamed for the delays. Many passengers are now being advised to book with airlines known for better customer service and reliability.

The NCAA has promised to continue monitoring airline compliance and ensure passengers are treated fairly. The agency says it will not hesitate to sanction any airline that breaches the rules.
