Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he was asked to drop his 2027 presidential ambition in favour of a southern candidate.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku said there was no meeting where such a request was made and described the reports as false and politically motivated. He alleged that the story was part of a campaign by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to create division within the opposition.

Atiku stressed that he was never involved in any discussion about stepping aside and insisted that the narrative was invented to weaken the growing support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which was recently adopted as a new coalition platform by some opposition figures.

He said the report was designed to distract voters from the rising influence of the ADC and the failures of the current administration. According to him, Nigerians are beginning to rally around the ADC as a credible alternative ahead of the next general elections.
The statement warned the ruling party against using false claims to manipulate public opinion, adding that the public remains focused on issues of governance and accountability. It also reaffirmed Atiku’s active involvement in opposition politics as the country moves toward the 2027 elections.
With political activities heating up, Atiku’s response signals his continued interest in contesting, and his commitment to working within any opposition framework that aims to unseat the APC government.
