Embattled Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), which was recently, renamed Adeyinka Adebayo University, Professor Kayode Soremekun squandered over N500 million within 12 months, this has been revealed.

“About N10 million is spent on contingencies monthly while over N200 million was lavished on Christmas and New Year Gifts in December last year,” a source alleged.

Sources within the university disclosed that last week alone, Prof Soremekun, who until his appointment was a lecturer at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), took a sum of N5.7 million from the coffers of the university.

The N5.7 million, which was allegedly withdrawn in cash and transported by a bursary staff was to furnish his already furnished residence of the Vice Chancellor.
FUOYE has of late been wallowing in problems bothering corruption and financial mismanagement since Prof Soremekun assumed office back in early 2016.

Revealing how the Vice Chancellor lived larger than life, one of the aggrieved staff of the university, who preferred anonymity, said Prof Soremekun was in the habit of boasting that he is a right-hand man of the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo and former Governor of Ekiti State and Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi.
“He will tell whoever cares to listen that he is Acting President Osinbajo and Fayemi’s ally and it was the Acting President that got him the FUOYE Vice Chancellor’s job, and as such, nothing can be done to him.
“It is his high handedness that is responsible for the incessant crises in the university because the there was no crisis before he assumed office,” the aggrieved staff said.
