More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State.

The defectors, led by Godwin Obasi, were formally received by the PDP leadership in Enugu on Saturday.

Obasi said the group decided to leave the NDC after becoming dissatisfied with the party’s choice of candidates for various elective positions.
He said the defectors came from all 260 wards and 17 local government areas in the state and had resolved to join the PDP.
Receiving the new members, the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Uche Nnaji, assured them that they would be accommodated within the party.
Nnaji accused the current state administration of failing to fulfil its promises to residents and called for collective efforts to change the situation.

He also criticised the state government over its taxation policies, alleging that residents were facing heavy tax burdens without corresponding improvements in their welfare.
The PDP candidate further alleged that pensioners and other beneficiaries were not receiving their pensions and gratuities as expected, while comparing the situation with neighbouring Imo and Anambra states.
Nnaji also claimed that the Enugu State Government had received substantial federal allocations since taking office and questioned how the funds had been utilised.
He further raised concerns about the level of internally generated revenue reported by the state in 2025, alleging that the revenue collection placed an excessive burden on residents.
The allegations made by Nnaji were political claims contained in his remarks at the defection event and were not independently verified in the report.
Also speaking, PDP chieftain Basil Ani described the movement of more than 6,000 NDC members into the PDP as a boost to the party’s structure in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 elections.
