The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The request was made during the CBCN’s 2026 Synod held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The bishops presented their appeal to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented the Federal Government at the gathering.
Speaking on behalf of the South-East, Archbishop Robert Imoh commended the Tinubu administration before asking the SGF to convey the group’s request to the President.
Imoh appealed for Kanu’s release, citing the need to address concerns from the South-East over his continued detention.

Representatives of the six geopolitical zones also expressed their backing for the President-General of the CBCN, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas.
The representatives authorised Kawas to speak on national matters on behalf of the conference.
Kawas said the mandate from the representatives had given him the authority to address issues affecting the country.
The bishops stated that the CBCN has more than 950 consecrated and installed canonical bishops across Nigeria.
The organisation also said it has a presence in 51 countries around the world.
The conference further expressed its support for the Tinubu administration while calling for Kanu’s release.
