The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has unveiled plans to raise Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity to 75,000 megawatts within one year if elected president in 2027.

Adebayo disclosed this while speaking during a Personality Interview Series organised by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said his proposed power strategy would rely on a combination of gas, solar and hydroelectric generation, alongside the rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric stations.
According to him, Nigeria has moved beyond the stage where electricity targets of 10,000MW or 20,000MW would be enough to support the country’s growing population and economy. He said the nation needed a much larger and more reliable power system to achieve industrial growth.
Adebayo said gas would play a major role in his plan because Nigeria has large gas resources that can be used to generate electricity. He also proposed greater investment in renewable energy, particularly solar power.
The SDP candidate said electricity generation should not depend entirely on the national grid. He proposed the expansion of mini-grids and embedded power projects to provide electricity directly to communities, industrial clusters and other areas poorly served by the existing grid.
He said decentralised generation would allow businesses and communities to access power closer to where it is needed while also reducing pressure on the national grid.
Adebayo also plans to rehabilitate existing hydroelectric facilities to recover lost generation capacity. He said the government should make better use of infrastructure already in place while investing in additional power projects.

Another part of his proposal is the development of local manufacturing for the energy sector. He said Nigeria should produce solar equipment and other power-related components locally instead of relying heavily on imports.
According to him, local production would create jobs, reduce dependence on imported equipment and support the growth of the renewable energy industry.
Adebayo said electricity development must be directly connected to economic growth, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture and small businesses. He argued that dependable electricity would help businesses reduce their reliance on generators and lower their operating costs.
He also said increasing electricity generation alone would not solve Nigeria’s power problems. According to him, improvements are needed across transmission, distribution, electricity procurement and the wider power market.
The presidential candidate said his administration would therefore adopt a coordinated approach covering the entire electricity value chain, from generation to transmission and distribution.
He said the goal would be to ensure that additional generation capacity translates into more reliable and affordable electricity for households and businesses.
Adebayo maintained that Nigeria has enough natural and renewable energy resources to build a much larger electricity system. He said better planning, investment and reforms would be required to convert those resources into dependable power.
He added that his proposed electricity programme would form part of a wider economic plan aimed at increasing production, creating employment and improving living conditions.
The SDP candidate said Nigeria’s efforts to achieve sustained economic growth would remain difficult without solving its electricity shortage and providing businesses with a stable power supply.
