The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed willingness to support the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) with biometric verification technology to improve the credibility of its examination process.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, made the request during a courtesy visit to INEC headquarters in Abuja, where he led members of the board’s management team.

Aina said JAMB approached INEC because of its experience in using biometric technology to identify and verify large numbers of Nigerians during elections.
He explained that the board was looking to strengthen its biometric verification system and had learnt that INEC might have some biometric equipment that was no longer in active use.
The JAMB registrar therefore asked the electoral commission to consider releasing some of the equipment to the board for use in improving its examination processes.
Receiving the delegation, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, welcomed the request and described JAMB as an important institution in Nigeria’s education system.

Amupitan said INEC had continued to expand its use of technology in elections, citing recent electoral activities, including the Anambra and FCT Area Council elections, the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls and various bye-elections.
According to him, the use of technology in recent elections had received positive reactions from stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission, particularly regarding the credibility and peaceful conduct of the exercises.
The INEC chairman directed the commission’s Director of Information and Communications Technology to examine JAMB’s request and conduct a proof-of-concept assessment.
The assessment will determine whether any available biometric equipment is in suitable technical condition and can meet JAMB’s requirements.
Amupitan said the request showed the importance of cooperation among government agencies, particularly where institutions can share technology, expertise and other resources to improve public services.
He also assured the JAMB delegation that INEC was open to exploring additional areas of cooperation that could strengthen the operations of both agencies.
Aina thanked the INEC leadership for receiving his delegation and reaffirmed JAMB’s interest in building stronger institutional ties with the electoral commission.
