Former senators Rufai Sani Hanga and Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, alongside Senator Masud El-Jibrin Doguwa, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The politicians joined the ruling party with 136,038 other defectors during the unveiling of campaign groups for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those who also moved into the APC was Ali Datti Yako, the Kano State Deputy Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who defected alongside some members of the party’s state executive committee.
Former Ungogo Local Government Chairman, Badaru Umar, also joined the APC along with supporters of former Kano APC governorship candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.
The former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Isyaku Ali Danja, was another notable politician who announced his defection to the ruling party together with his supporters.
Former PDP deputy governorship candidate, Yusuf Bello Danbatta, also moved to the APC with his supporters, while former presidential Special Adviser Senator Baraka Sani was among the other defectors.

Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya, chairman of the NNPP’s “Book Faction”, was also listed among those who joined the APC.
Former NNPP senatorial candidate Abdulmajid Dauda Dandawaki and his supporters also defected, while Kabiru, a former NDC candidate for the state House of Assembly, joined the ruling party.
The latest movement adds to a growing number of opposition politicians joining the APC in Kano in recent months.
The defections have increased since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC, with several lawmakers and political appointees subsequently following him into the ruling party.
The latest group includes politicians with experience at the federal and state levels, as well as former local government officials and members of opposition party structures.
