Troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion have arrested a 60-year-old man suspected of working as an informant for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.

The suspect, identified as Mallam Garba Audi, was arrested along the Cross-Kukawa road in Kukawa Local Government Area at about 9:55 a.m. on September 3, 2026.

The arrest followed intelligence received by the military about the suspected movement of an ISWAP spy from Monguno towards Kukawa.
Acting on the information, the troops increased surveillance around their defensive position and later found Audi wandering along the Cross-Kukawa road.

During preliminary questioning, the suspect reportedly told the soldiers that he had lost his way while travelling from Digimari in northern Borno.
Troops also recovered bags of cement containing clothing and mosquito nets from him. The items were taken into custody along with the suspect as investigations continued.
The suspect and the recovered materials are expected to be handed over to the 19 Military Intelligence Regiment for further investigation.
Authorities will determine through the ongoing investigation whether the man was involved in intelligence activities for ISWAP and establish the circumstances surrounding his movement in the area.
