The attack occurred despite an earlier security warning issued by the Sokoto State Police Command over intelligence suggesting that suspected bandits were planning an assault on communities in Kebbe LGA.

The attackers reportedly invaded Girkau and remained in the community for several hours, leaving residents with limited options for seeking safety during the operation.

According to reports from Crisis Reporter in the North-West region, Bakastine, the bandits killed five people and injured four others during the attack.

The attackers also reportedly rustled a large number of cattle from the community before leaving the area.

The incident affected several locations within Girkau Ward. One person was reportedly killed in Dukura, while another resident was killed in Jabga.

Two additional people sustained injuries during the violence, while a local vigilante was also abducted by the attackers.

The bandits reportedly took the vigilante’s locally made firearm after kidnapping him.

The latest attack has raised fresh concerns about the security situation in Kebbe Local Government Area, where bandit activities have reportedly increased in recent times.

The incident also comes after residents of Kebbe town were reportedly threatened by bandits who demanded a ₦40 million levy from the community.

The attackers had allegedly warned that failure to pay the demanded amount would result in an attack on the town.

The latest violence has therefore added to growing concerns among residents over the ability of security agencies to prevent further attacks and protect communities in the area.

The attack also raises questions about the effectiveness of the earlier security alert issued by the police, as the suspected bandits were still able to enter Girkau and carry out the assault despite the reported intelligence on their planned operation.
