The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has demanded an apology or resignation from Governor Francis Nwifuru over his recent comments concerning the dominance of the All Progressives Congress at the grassroots ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Darlington Peter-Onwe, made the demand during a live radio programme on Friday.

Peter-Onwe accused the governor of making statements capable of encouraging political tension and violence in the state as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He called on Nwifuru to withdraw the remarks and apologise to residents of the state, or leave office if he was unwilling to do so.
The PDP spokesman argued that the governor, as the chief executive of the state, had a responsibility to protect the lives and property of all residents, including members and supporters of opposition parties.

He further claimed that the governor’s comments had contributed to growing hostility towards opposition politicians and some media workers in Ebonyi.
The controversy followed comments made by Nwifuru on Tuesday during the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairmen and vice-chairmen in Abakaliki.
The governor had directed the council chairmen to work towards securing total APC control at the grassroots during the 2027 elections.
He also warned that chairmen who failed to deliver their respective local government areas for the ruling party could face consequences.
The PDP said such political directives from a sitting governor were inappropriate and could create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation ahead of the elections.
The party therefore called on Nwifuru to retract the statements and apologise or resign, while urging political actors in the state to avoid comments that could increase tension before the 2027 polls.
