PDP Can Rescue Ogun State, Deputy Gov Candidate Says

The deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, has declared that the party remains the best option to tackle the state’s socio-economic and development challenges ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

She made the declaration on Tuesday during a visit to her hometown of Ijemo in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, where she met with party members, community leaders and residents.

The event attracted a large number of supporters, who welcomed Sowunmi-Kolapo alongside the PDP’s Ogun Central Senatorial candidate, Iyabo Obasanjo, and other party leaders.

Addressing the gathering, Sowunmi-Kolapo urged the people of Ogun State, especially those from Egba land, not to allow intimidation to influence their political decisions. She maintained that the PDP governorship ticket represents the interests and aspirations of the state’s indigenous people and called on voters to give the party their full support in the 2027 election.

She described the PDP as the most credible and organised political platform capable of changing the fortunes of Ogun State. According to her, the party’s achievements while in government remain unmatched and provide enough reason for residents to return it to power.

The deputy governorship candidate expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in the next governorship election, saying the party continues to enjoy growing support across the state. She also stated that neither the party nor its members would be discouraged by political pressure or intimidation as preparations for the election continue.

Sowunmi-Kolapo also warned against allowing what she described as “a stranger” to become governor of Ogun State. She explained that although the Egba people are known for welcoming others, the leadership of the state should remain in the hands of people who truly understand its history, culture and aspirations.

She encouraged eligible voters to participate fully in the election and assured them that every valid vote would count. She also urged residents who had not obtained their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so before the polls.

Speaking at the event, Ogun State PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella said the party remains the only political organisation with a proven record of delivering democratic dividends to the people of the state.

Tella noted that despite being out of office, projects executed by previous PDP administrations are still visible in different sectors across Ogun State. He urged residents to compare those achievements with the performance of later governments before making their choice in the 2027 election.

He also appealed to party members and supporters to remain united, strengthen grassroots mobilisation and encourage more eligible residents to obtain their PVCs. He expressed confidence that the PDP is well placed to reclaim power in the state.

Also speaking, the PDP’s Ogun Central Senatorial candidate, Iyabo Obasanjo, appealed to the people of Ogun Central, particularly those from Egba land, to unite behind the party in the 2027 general election.

She said Ogun Central deserves the opportunity to produce the next governor through a political party whose governorship ticket includes an Egba indigene.

Obasanjo maintained that the PDP remains the party best positioned to move Ogun State forward and appealed to residents to vote massively for its candidates.

She also recalled the role played by earlier generations in making Abeokuta the capital of Ogun State, saying the people should continue to protect their political interests by supporting a governorship ticket that reflects the aspirations of Ogun Central and the Egba people.
