The party said the decision followed consultations with major stakeholders and was made to present Nigerians with a leadership team built on competence, integrity and inclusiveness.

Speaking in Abuja on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, described Konto as a public health professional and humanitarian with more than three decades of experience in healthcare, community development and humanitarian services.

He said she retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership positions, including Community and Government Liaison Officer. During her time there, she worked extensively in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, leading humanitarian response and mobilisation programmes for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable communities.

Asogwa added that Konto is a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist with a Master’s degree in Public Health. He said she had also lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. He added that she is the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).

He further stated that she speaks English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura fluently, and has worked closely with government institutions, traditional rulers and civil society organisations on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), as well as humanitarian programmes.

According to the Labour Party, Konto’s nomination reflects its commitment to promoting gender inclusion, national unity and capable leadership from different parts of the country.

The party said her selection brings compassion, administrative experience and a strong understanding of the country’s development challenges, particularly those affecting women, children and communities facing insecurity.

It added that the Okereke-Konto ticket represents a new generation of people-focused leadership committed to rebuilding hope, strengthening institutions, improving the economy and enhancing security.

The party also called on Nigerians to support the Okereke-Konto ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
