Governors Rally Behind State Police Bill, Final Test Begins

Support for the proposed state police grew on Thursday as the 36 State Houses of Assembly, governors, the Labour Party and the Forum of APC Speakers backed the Senate-approved constitutional amendment.

Their support has increased expectations that the bill could secure the approvals needed before it is sent to President Bola Tinubu for assent.

The bill now faces its final constitutional hurdle, requiring endorsement from at least 24 state assemblies.

Governors and lawmakers in states including Benue, Kano, Gombe, Bayelsa, Plateau and Ondo described the proposal as a practical step towards improving security and responding faster to local threats.

The Labour Party and the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures also supported the amendment, saying stronger safeguards in the bill could reduce fears of political misuse.

They argued that a community-based policing system would strengthen security while maintaining accountability.

However, the Peoples Redemption Party opposed the proposal, questioning the timing of the reform and urging Nigerians to reject it.

Despite the criticism, support continues to grow as state assemblies prepare to begin formal consideration of the legislation.
