Marketers Move To Import Cooking Gas

Cooking gas marketers are preparing to import large volumes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas as prices continue to rise across Nigeria.

The move comes after the cost of the product climbed by about 140 per cent, with prices increasing from around N1,000 per kilogramme earlier this year to as much as N2,400 in some areas.

Industry operators say local production has failed to meet growing demand, leading to shortages and higher prices.

They also explained that reduced LPG supply from the Dangote refinery is linked to increased internal usage as the facility expands fuel production, rather than exports as widely speculated.

To ease the pressure, the Federal Government and industry stakeholders are working to boost supply.

Marketers have reportedly secured approval to import more cooking gas, while the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority is collaborating with key players to stabilise the market and improve availability.

Despite assurances that supply conditions are improving, many retailers say shortages persist and consumers are still struggling to access the product.

The rising cost has pushed some households back to using charcoal and firewood as the search for affordable cooking alternatives continues.
