EFCC Raises Alarm Over Costly Primaries

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that some governorship aspirants spend between ₦20 billion and ₦30 billion during election primaries.

He warned that such huge spending poses a danger to Nigeria’s democracy and encourages corruption in public office.

Speaking at the University of Ilorin on Wednesday, Olukoyede said politicians who invest enormous sums to secure power often face pressure to recover their money after taking office.

According to him, this can lead to the misuse of public funds and weaken good governance.
The EFCC boss also expressed concern over vote-buying and other forms of electoral inducement.
He disclosed that the commission had arrested and prosecuted several individuals, including politicians and electoral officials, for offences linked to elections.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace, Olukoyede said the EFCC plans to deploy drones and other technology to monitor polling activities.
He urged political parties, security agencies and electoral stakeholders to work together to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
