NMA Denies Suspension Of Workers Agreement

The Nigerian Medical Association has dismissed reports claiming the Federal Government suspended negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement for health workers until after the 2027 elections.

The association described the reports as false and misleading. It said discussions between the government and health sector unions were still ongoing.

The clarification followed rumours circulating online that the Bola Tinubu administration had stopped talks relating to salaries, welfare and working conditions in the health sector.

In response, the NMA said it obtained an official explanation from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment denying the claim. The association maintained that negotiations had not been abandoned.
The Ministry of Labour also denied suspending discussions with health workers and professional bodies. It stated that collective bargaining remained important for industrial peace and better healthcare delivery across the country.
The ministry added that consultations with unions were continuing despite economic challenges facing the country.
The NMA reassured doctors and other health workers that efforts to conclude the agreement were still on course.
The development comes amid growing concern over poor welfare conditions and the increasing migration of Nigerian medical professionals abroad in search of better opportunities.
