No Tax, No Citizenship – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Friday defended taxation as a key requirement for citizenship and national development while speaking at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

He said citizens who avoid taxes without legal exemption should not be seen as full citizens, noting that public services depend on tax revenue.

His remarks come amid rising economic pressure in Nigeria.

Tinubu explained that although taxation is unpopular across all social classes, it remains essential for government to fund infrastructure, healthcare, education and other services.

He also described taxation as necessary despite its difficulties, comparing it to a painful but important process that produces results.

The President also questioned how government could function without revenue, stressing that services such as hospitals, roads and social support systems require steady funding.

His comments were made as Nigerians continue to face inflation, high living costs and rising tariffs.

Tinubu’s statement comes as his administration pushes economic reforms including subsidy removal, currency adjustments and tax changes, which have contributed to economic strain for many households.

Critics argue that the reforms have yet to ease hardship, while the government maintains they are necessary for long term stability.
