Prosecutors told the court that the earlier three count charge was increased to five.

The allegations relate to interception of private communications and actions said to fall under Nigeria’s cybercrime and communications laws.

The former governor is accused of acting unlawfully alongside others not yet before the court.

The case stems from remarks El Rufai made during a media appearance where he suggested that security conversations involving the NSA were accessed.

His comments triggered public debate and calls for investigation. Government officials later pushed for legal action over the matter.

The presiding judge struck out the initial charge sheet after it was amended and adjourned proceedings for further hearing.

The former governor remains on bail as the matter continues. The court is expected to hear more arguments as the trial progresses.
