Atiku Warns NASS Over Election Act Flaw
Atiku Abubakar has called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to urgently amend parts of the Electoral Act, warning that a provision could open the door to ballot manipulation.
His concerns were shared in a statement by his aide, Phrank Shaibu.
He pointed to Section 63 of the law, which allows a returning officer to count ballot papers without official marks based on discretion.
According to him, this introduces uncertainty into a process that should be clear and strictly guided by rules.
Atiku said the clause could weaken confidence in elections and create room for abuse.
He argued that leaving such decisions to personal judgment risks disputes and could affect the credibility of results.
He also urged Independent National Electoral Commission to tighten its guidelines and called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure stricter review of key laws.
The former vice president warned that trust in future elections depends on both strong laws and proper enforcement.
