Retired Police Block Aso Villa Gate

Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday blocked a gate at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sign the Police Exit Bill into law.

The protesters, under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, said the action followed years of hardship under the current pension system.

The bill seeks to remove police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The legislation was passed by the National Assembly in December 2025 and forwarded to the Presidency in March 2026.

However, it is yet to receive presidential assent, a delay that has angered many retirees. Early in the day, the protesters gathered at the Villa entrance, chanting and displaying placards calling for immediate action.

Security personnel, including police and operatives of the Department of State Services, moved in to prevent the group from entering the premises.

Despite attempts to disperse them, the retirees remained at the gate and insisted on speaking directly with the President.

The crowd maintained its position, refusing to leave the area.

The retirees said the Contributory Pension Scheme has left many of them struggling after years of service.

They called for urgent intervention, insisting that signing the bill would address their welfare concerns. As of the time of reporting, the Presidency had not issued any response.
