ADC Challenges FG On Fuel Cost
In Abuja, the African Democratic Congress has questioned how savings from the removal of fuel subsidy are being used, saying petrol prices have risen sharply since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023.
The party made the remarks while responding to criticism from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the ADC, said the party was drawing attention to publicly available data on the country’s economic situation.
He said petrol prices had climbed from about N255 per litre to around N1,500 in many parts of Nigeria, adding that the increase has pushed up transport fares and food costs.
He also pointed to reports suggesting the poverty rate has grown since the subsidy removal, saying many Nigerians now struggle to meet basic needs.
According to him, surveys show that a large number of citizens believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Abdullahi further questioned the use of the reported N6.4 trillion saved from the subsidy removal and raised concerns about developments in agriculture, including the closure of several rice mills and a rise in the nation’s food import bill.
