Residents of Plateau State have called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to take stronger and more practical measures to stop the killings and violent attacks across the state.

The residents criticised the governor’s repeated condemnation of attacks and condolence messages, arguing that such statements had done little to prevent further loss of lives.

Their reaction followed a bloody weekend between Friday, September 11, and Sunday, September 13, during which about 21 people were reportedly killed in separate attacks in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South Local Government Areas.
Suspected Fulani extremists and local militia groups were reportedly responsible for the attacks.
Reacting to the incidents on Monday, Mutfwang condemned the killings and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and improving security across the state.
The governor said the state government was working with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders through dialogue, intelligence sharing and community engagement to strengthen the state’s security arrangements.
He also said protecting lives and property remained a priority of his administration and assured residents that security agencies were pursuing those responsible for the attacks.
However, residents who spoke during a radio programme on Monday evening expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response, saying the persistent attacks showed that stronger measures were needed.

Social activist Nanle Bamshak accused the governor of failing to give adequate attention to the security situation and alleged that his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 election had become a priority.
Bamshak said many residents had supported Mutfwang during the 2023 election because they expected his administration to tackle the violence affecting communities, but argued that the continuing attacks had left many people disappointed.
Another caller, Peter Alamba, said residents were becoming frustrated with what he described as repeated government statements following attacks.
He called for preventive action capable of stopping further killings rather than responses issued after people had already been killed.
Polycarp Bitrus also criticised the governor’s handling of insecurity, claiming that communities were being attacked and displaced while the government continued to issue similar statements after each incident.
John Fadung, another caller, said Mutfwang had disappointed some of his former supporters who had stood by him during the 2023 election.
The residents urged the state government to strengthen security measures, improve coordination with security agencies and take more effective steps to protect communities from further attacks.
The criticism comes as Plateau continues to face security challenges in several communities, with residents demanding measures that can prevent attacks and restore confidence in the ability of authorities to protect lives and property.
