Nurses Forumn Demand Action Over Hospital Attack
A nursing group has called for sanctions after a soldier allegedly assaulted a nurse at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State.
The Elegant Nurses Forum said the incident involved Nurse Hafsat Ibrahim Musa and a serving soldier identified as Sergeant AB Victus Ike during a duty shift at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
The incident reportedly happened on the evening of February 27 around 7:05 pm while the nurse was attending to the patient.
Reports indicated that the soldier became angry after requesting bedsheets that were not immediately available in the emergency unit and allegedly slapped the nurse while she was carrying out her duties.
The group condemned the act and warned that attacks on healthcare workers are becoming more common across hospitals in Nigeria.
It said such violence can cause emotional distress, fear and loss of confidence among nurses, while also creating an unsafe environment for medical staff and patients.
The forum urged authorities to launch a full investigation and ensure disciplinary action against the soldier.
It also called on the Nigerian Army to disclose the outcome of the case and demanded stronger protection for healthcare workers, stressing that hospitals must remain safe places for both staff and patients.
