Distillers Storm Lagos Over Alcohol Ban

Workers in Nigeria’s distilling industry are set to storm the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Wednesday, protesting the Federal Government’s clampdown on sachet alcohol and small PET bottles.

The planned rally follows the government’s formal launch of nationwide enforcement and an awareness campaign in Abuja.

The ban, which took effect on January 1, 2026, outlaws the production and sale of alcohol in sachets and bottles below 200 millilitres as part of efforts to tackle underage drinking.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said the action came after years of talks, delays and survey findings showing high alcohol use among minors.
Industry groups have warned that the restriction could cost up to five million jobs and say earlier agreements granted them time to adjust.
Government agencies insist enforcement will continue, arguing that limiting small pack sizes will help curb harmful consumption and protect young Nigerians.
