Fresh details have emerged on why President Bola Tinubu directed former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to retire.

Sources said the President was displeased after discovering that monthly allocations meant for state police commands were not remitted for several months, despite funds being released to boost operations and tackle rising insecurity.

According to insiders, some state commands reportedly went six to seven months without receiving allocations, affecting logistics and response to kidnappings and attacks in states such as Kaduna, Niger and Zamfara.

The situation reportedly angered the President, who had sought improved security performance after approving operational funds.
Another issue said to have strained relations was the removal and redeployment of senior officer Tunji Disu from the Special Protection Unit after he moved to implement a directive on withdrawing police officers from VIP duties.
The decision was later reversed by the President, but Disu was subsequently redeployed, a move seen in some quarters as defiance.
Sources also pointed to concerns over special promotions and morale within the Force.
Egbetokun resigned last week, officially citing family reasons, and Disu was appointed Acting IGP pending confirmation by the Police Council.
