Tinubu Plans To Turn Votes Into Ritual – Ex Presidential Candidate

Former Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo on Tuesday accused President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio of moves he believes could weaken Nigeria’s democracy.

He spoke at the #OccupyNASS gathering held at the National Assembly in Abuja. He claimed that proposed legislative changes may open the door to election manipulation.

Addressing supporters at the protest ground, Adebayo alleged that the current government and some lawmakers are working to entrench rigging through amendments to electoral laws.

He described the development as “unfortunate and regrettable” and warned it could undo the democratic gains secured at independence.

He said the situation risks turning elections into an empty ritual.

He argued that the matter goes beyond party rivalry and concerns the rights of citizens to take part in shaping their country’s future.

Adebayo urged Nigerians, including religious and community leaders, to become more active in civic engagement and defend credible elections.

He cautioned that while the protests have remained peaceful, rising frustration over electoral reforms could deepen tension if lawmakers fail to act with transparency.
