INEC Budget Proposal Sparks Public Anger

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission has proposed ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections, a sharp rise from the ₦313.4 billion used for the 2023 polls.

The commission also asked for ₦171 billion to fund its 2026 activities, bringing its total request to over one trillion naira.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan presented the figures to the National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters in Abuja.

He said the proposals were prepared in line with the Electoral Act 2022, which requires election budgets to be submitted at least a year before the polls.
The 2027 estimate covers operational, administrative, technological and capital expenses, while the 2026 request is meant for bye-elections, off-season polls, personnel costs and overheads.
INEC warned that the ₦140 billion already provided for 2026 operations would not meet urgent and flexible funding needs.
The large budget proposal comes amid debate over recent amendments to the Electoral Act.
The Senate revised Section 60 to require electronic transmission of results to the IREV portal, but also allowed manual result sheets to serve as the primary basis for collation if electronic transmission fails due to network issues.
