The New Nigeria Peoples Party has denied claims that its leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is planning a move to the All Progressives Congress.

According to the NNPP, the report suggesting talks between Kwankwaso and President Bola Tinubu never happened. The party explained that Kwankwaso has not held any meeting with the president or his aides to discuss leaving the party.

The NNPP said the only recent meeting between Kwankwaso and Tinubu took place in January 2024 and had nothing to do with defection.
It added that those pushing the story are political figures who have already crossed over to the APC and are trying to justify their decision.
The party accused powerful interests of working together to damage Kwankwaso’s image and block any future alliances that could threaten the current political order.
It described the media campaign as a “hatchet job” and dismissed reports explaining why the alleged defection failed as “hogwash”, urging Nigerians to ignore the claims.
