The plan was announced by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service in a public notice issued on January 21, 2026.

The notice explains that the action is based on provisions of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, which gives tax authorities the legal backing to collect outstanding taxes through third parties.

Under the arrangement, the revenue service can instruct banks, employers, business partners or anyone holding or owing money to a defaulting taxpayer to pay part or all of the debt directly to the government.

The funds may come from salaries, rents, business payments or bank balances linked to the taxpayer.

The tax authority says affected taxpayers still have the right to seek clarification, challenge assessments within the allowed timeframe and use dispute resolution channels provided by law.
