Nigeria has lost one of its most respected journalists as Yakubu Mohammed, co-founder of the defunct Newswatch magazine, died in the early hours of Wednesday at the age of 75.

He passed away at a hospital in Lagos after a brief illness, leaving behind a long record of service to journalism and public life.
Mohammed’s death occurred barely two months after the passing of his longtime colleague and fellow Newswatch founder, Dan Agbese.

The veteran journalist had only recently presented his memoir titled Beyond Expectations in November 2025, making his passing a painful moment for the media community.
Tributes quickly followed from across the country, led by President Bola Tinubu, state governors, media organisations, editors, and industry leaders. They described Mohammed as a fearless journalist whose work helped shape investigative reporting during Nigeria’s military era and strengthened press freedom.

Born in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mohammed built a career that spanned decades. He held senior editorial roles at New Nigerian Newspapers and National Concord before co-founding Newswatch in 1984. Beyond journalism, he also served as pro-chancellor and chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University and was active in several professional bodies.
His remains were moved from Lagos to Kogi State for burial today in line with Islamic rites. Mohammed is remembered as a bold voice, a mentor, and a builder of modern Nigerian journalism whose influence will endure long after his passing.
