President Bola Tinubu has ended decades of dangerous river travel and costly air trips to Bonny Island with the completion of the Bodo–Bonny Road in Rivers State.

The development was praised on Thursday by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a visit to Bonny Local Government Area.
The project delivers a 37.8-kilometre road that provides the first land access to Bonny Island, a major oil and gas centre. For years, residents and visitors relied on boats or helicopters, often facing safety risks and high costs due to tides and weather.

Wike said past administrations made repeated promises on the road without success until the current government completed it. He also credited the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for ensuring the project was delivered, describing the road as a turning point for the people of Bonny.
He urged residents to stay united despite political tensions in Rivers State, saying cooperation among leaders brings development. According to him, unity would attract more projects and benefits to the area under the present administration.

During the visit, the lawmaker representing Degema–Bonny Federal Constituency, Cyril Hart, praised Wike for promoting women participation in governance while he was governor. He said efforts are ongoing at the National Assembly to expand that policy nationwide through legislation.
Bonny council chairman, Abinye Pepple, also commended Wike’s record in the area and described the road as historic. He said the project has given residents a new experience of traveling by land to Port Harcourt and pledged continued political support for President Tinubu ahead of 2027.
