The African Democratic Congress has inaugurated a Constitution Review Committee as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The committee was inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja by the party’s National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark.
Mark appointed senior lawyer, Etigwe Uwa (SAN), as chairman of the committee and charged members to produce a constitution that promotes inclusiveness, transparency and accountability. He said the review was timely as the party continues to expand its reach and role in national politics, stressing that the exercise is aimed at strengthening the party’s founding principles, not changing them.

The ADC gained renewed national attention in July 2025 when it was adopted as the coalition platform by opposition leaders seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Since then, the party has intensified efforts to build its structures nationwide under the leadership of Mark as national chairman and former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as national secretary.
Mark said the committee is expected to review provisions on party organs, primaries, dispute resolution, discipline, membership rights and inclusion of women, youths and persons with disabilities, while ensuring compliance with the Nigerian Constitution and electoral laws.

The committee, which includes serving and former lawmakers, senior lawyers and party leaders, is to submit an interim report with proposed amendments to the National Working Committee within 30 days.
Responding, Uwa assured party members of a broad and inclusive review process. He said the committee would draw from best practices to produce a clearer and more democratic constitution capable of attracting more Nigerians to the ADC and strengthening trust in the party’s internal processes.
