Canada removed 366 Nigerians between January and October 2025 as immigration authorities stepped up enforcement, while 974 others are currently listed for deportation under ongoing removal processes.

The figures come from official data released by the Canada Border Services Agency, updated in late November. Nigeria ranked ninth among countries with the highest number of deportations during the period and fifth among those with citizens awaiting removal.

The increase marks a return to the top list after Nigeria dropped out in 2023 and 2024. Records show 339 Nigerians were deported in 2019, a number that fell steadily through 2022 before rising sharply again in 2025.
The removals are part of a wider push by Canada to tighten immigration control. Authorities now deport nearly 400 foreign nationals every week, the fastest pace seen in more than a decade, as officials respond to housing pressure, labour concerns, and border security issues.

Most of those removed are failed refugee claimants whose asylum requests were rejected, while a smaller number were deported over criminal or security-related issues. Canadian law mandates removal once a deportation order becomes enforceable.
Despite the crackdown, Canada remains a major destination for Nigerians. Tens of thousands moved to the country in recent years, with Nigerians ranking among the top groups gaining permanent residency and citizenship, driven by job opportunities and Canada’s growing demand for skilled workers.
