Abia State Governor Alex Otti has laid out his plans for 2026, assuring residents of stronger economic growth, better welfare, and improved living conditions across the state.

He spoke on Thursday during his New Year address to the people of Abia.
The governor said his administration will begin paying long-standing gratuity arrears owed to retirees, some dating back to the early 2000s. He described this move as part of a wider effort to reward years of service and restore trust in government.

Otti explained that 2026 will focus heavily on job creation, investment, and cutting costs that slow down businesses. He said the government is working to boost productivity, attract investors, and grow the state’s economy by removing barriers that make it hard for people to produce and earn.
He announced that about ₦5 billion has been set aside for training and skills development, with plans to post public workers only to roles where they can perform well. He also revealed that new housing projects are coming, starting with affordable homes for low-income earners, while opening space for private investors in the real estate sector.

On education, the governor said schools will see tighter supervision, restored science and technical colleges, and continued funding, with 20 percent of the state budget committed to the sector. Agriculture, youth empowerment, women support, and care for persons with disabilities will also receive focused attention.
Otti said security remains firm in Abia, warning criminals to stay away, while urging citizens to register to vote ahead of the 2027 elections. He called on residents to support government efforts by obeying the law and paying taxes, saying shared effort is key to building a better Abia in the new year.
