Abia State Governor Alex Otti has declared that he will remain in the Labour Party, even as former presidential candidate Peter Obi plans to leave the party. He made this known on Tuesday during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia.

The decision comes amid growing talks about Obi’s political future after the 2023 elections. Otti said Obi personally informed him of his plan to exit the party, adding that he respects the choice but will not follow the same path.
Speaking on why he is staying, Otti said the Labour Party gave him the platform to become governor and that he feels a duty to help rebuild and reposition it. He noted that his membership in the party predates Obi’s entry.

The governor explained that his focus is on strengthening the party rather than chasing new alliances. He said discussions about other options can only come after genuine efforts to fix the party have been made.
Otti also addressed calls by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for him to join the APC. He dismissed the appeal, saying he has no interest in political distractions and prefers to concentrate on governance.
He added that his administration remains committed to serving the people of Abia State, stressing that responding to every political comment would slow down meaningful work.
