The story spread quickly and raised fear among residents already living with security worries.
The Nigerian Army said troops under Operation Hadin Kai picked up a suspect during an operation around Banki Central Mosque. The military added that items believed to be parts for making an explosive device were recovered during the arrest.
By Wednesday, the Borno State Police Command pushed back against the report. Police said their officers carried out the arrest, not the army, and that the suspect is currently in police custody after questioning.

Police explained that the items found on the suspect were ordinary materials such as wires, old phone batteries, scrap gadgets and shoes. According to investigators, the items showed no signs of being prepared for an explosive attack.
Security officials said the arrest happened during routine surveillance around the mosque area. The suspect was stopped, searched and taken in for further checks before the case was moved to the state police headquarters for deeper investigation.
The police warned the public against spreading unverified security reports, saying such claims can cause panic. They urged residents to rely on official updates as investigations continue to determine the suspect’s intentions.
