The Peoples Democratic Party is facing fresh pressure ahead of the 2027 general elections as Nyesom Wike called on the party to fix its internal troubles or risk losing relevance.

The warning came as divisions continue to weaken the opposition party nationwide.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory spoke on Monday in Port Harcourt during a media briefing, where he raised concerns about the party’s direction and leadership. He said the PDP must act quickly to avoid further damage before the next polls.
Wike said the party’s biggest problem is poor leadership focus, adding that refusal to admit mistakes and correct them has kept the PDP stuck in crisis since the 2023 elections. He warned that ignoring the situation could cost the party power for years.

He argued that winning elections goes beyond ambition and requires planning, unity, and honest self-review. According to him, rebuilding the party now is better than allowing it to collapse completely before 2027.
The former Rivers governor also criticised the PDP national convention held in Ibadan last November, accusing party leaders of pushing personal interests. He blamed the exercise for deepening cracks within the party and widening existing rivalries.
Tension within the PDP has worsened in recent months, with public disagreements between Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. The fallout has fueled accusations of betrayal, defections to the ruling party, and fears that internal fights could hand victory to opponents in the next election cycle.
