Nigeria is facing the risk of another nationwide hospital shutdown as resident doctors threaten to resume an indefinite strike over unmet agreements with the Federal Government.

The warning came from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors following delays in implementing a deal reached late last year.
The association raised the alarm on Sunday through a public appeal issued by its leadership, saying patience among doctors is wearing thin. Resident doctors said the situation has reached a breaking point after repeated extensions and missed deadlines by government officials.
The dispute centres on a Memorandum of Understanding signed after resident doctors suspended a month-long strike on November 29. Under the deal, the government promised to meet key demands within four weeks, a timeline doctors say has now passed without action.

According to the association, the failure to act has deepened frustration among doctors who form the backbone of care in tertiary hospitals. Many say they are overworked, poorly supported, and losing trust in dialogue with authorities.
The doctors explained that several ultimatums and goodwill extensions were granted before and after the agreement, yet little progress has been made. They warned that another total strike would shut down services nationwide and leave millions of patients without care.
The association is now calling on respected medical elders to step in and press the government to act quickly. As of the time of reporting, the Federal Ministry of Health had not responded, while hospitals across the country wait anxiously for a resolution.
