Nigeria’s National Assembly has directed that recently approved tax reform laws be re-gazetted after lawmakers raised concerns that the versions published by the Federal Government did not match what was passed by parliament.

The issue surfaced in Abuja on Friday after Abdusammad Dasuki, a lawmaker from Sokoto State, alleged that changes were made to the tax bills after they were approved by both chambers and sent to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
Lawmakers said the discovery came after reviewing the official gazette, where provisions appeared that were not part of the final harmonised bills agreed upon by the Senate and House of Representatives.

Among the disputed sections are clauses allowing asset seizure without a court order, broader arrest and detention powers for tax suspects, and a rule requiring taxpayers to pay 20 percent of disputed sums before an appeal can be heard.
In response, the leadership of the National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, instructed the Clerk to re-gazette the laws and issue Certified True Copies of the versions officially passed by lawmakers.
The National Assembly said the move is aimed at protecting the integrity of the legislative process, as a committee begins a review of how the laws were handled, while legal groups and civil society have urged caution until the matter is fully resolved.
