Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has reacted to the fire outbreak that ravaged parts of Balogun on Lagos Island, expressing sympathy with traders and residents affected by the incident.

The fire broke out on Christmas Eve at the Great Nigeria House on Martins Street, a 22 storey building in the heart of the commercial district, causing widespread damage to shops, offices, and nearby structures.
Sanwo Olu visited the area on Wednesday to see the situation firsthand, saying the scale of destruction went beyond what written reports could explain, with many livelihoods badly hit by the blaze.
The fire started from the fourth floor of the building and spread quickly to other floors and surrounding properties, including Radio Nigeria, Oluwole Plaza, a mosque, and other buildings in the area.

Emergency teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Fire Service worked through the night for over 10 hours to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading further.
The governor praised firefighters and emergency workers for their swift response and assured victims that the state government would continue assessing the damage and provide support as the affected community begins recovery.
