Atiku Faults Tinubu Over LG Funds Ruling

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to obey a Supreme Court judgment on local government funding in Nigeria.

He said the ruling directed the Federal Government to pay council funds directly from FAAC but has not been carried out.
Atiku made the claim on his official Facebook page, saying the matter concerns the Federal Government, the presidency, and local governments across the country. He warned that by mid-2026, the administration would have spent two years without enforcing the court order.
According to him, the issue began after the Supreme Court ruled that local governments should receive funds directly to guarantee their autonomy. He said the continued non-compliance goes beyond delay and amounts to open refusal to respect the law.
Atiku argued that the failure to implement the judgment is hurting local councils, which are closest to the people.

He said communities are suffering from unpaid salaries, abandoned clinics, poor roads, and rising hardship as a result.
He alleged that the situation is being used for political advantage, claiming that obedience to the judgment is being treated as a bargaining tool to pressure governors and strengthen party control.
Atiku called on President Tinubu to act immediately by directing the Attorney-General to enforce the ruling. He warned that ignoring a final court judgment weakens democracy and sends the wrong message about leadership, accountability, and respect for the Constitution.
