Enugu Set To Clear Major Roads For BRT Rollout

The Enugu State government is preparing to remove tricycles, yellow buses, and minibuses from key highways in the state capital as it gets ready to launch its Bus Rapid Transit system.

The plan was announced during a meeting between the Transport Ministry and union leaders, who were briefed on the new transport structure coming to the city.

The restriction will apply to major routes that will now serve as dedicated BRT corridors. Officials explained that the move supports the state’s push to modernise its transport network and improve movement across the capital. Under the new arrangement, BRT buses will take over primary routes, while yellow buses and tricycles will cover inner and last-mile areas.

To support the rollout, the government has acquired CNG-powered BRT buses and thousands of electric taxis, with local assembly already planned. More than 80 bus shelters have been built, and the new buses will offer air-conditioning, padded seats, WiFi, and real-time tracking. Authorities say the upgrades are needed to meet the growing number of daily commuters in the city.

Unions were informed that anyone interested in operating BRT buses or managing terminals must submit proposals for review. The state also plans to expand its Ije Card electronic payment system so residents can easily access it across the state, with widespread distribution expected in the coming months.

Some transport groups voiced concerns about how their members will adjust, but they welcomed assurances that no one will be pushed out of work. They asked the government to provide affordable pathways for operators who wish to transition into the new system or invest in the buses.

At the end of the meeting, a joint committee made up of ministry officials and union representatives was formed to finalise operational plans. The state government is expected to announce the BRT launch date after the committee completes its work.
