The Northern Elders Unity Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, of using money and state influence to pressure PDP members into joining the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Forum’s National Secretary, Dr Abbas Sadauki, after a meeting of party elders from Kaura Namoda, Zurmi, Tsafe, and Bungudu local governments, the group said Matawalle’s actions were part of a plan to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Forum alleged that the minister was using appointments and financial incentives to lure party officials and supporters, creating leadership vacuums and destabilising the PDP’s structure in Zamfara and across the North-West.

According to the statement, Matawalle’s campaign of defections had already drawn thousands of PDP members to the APC, including former executives and elders from six local government areas.

The elders warned that such political tactics undermine democracy and fair competition, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop what they described as “a dangerous abuse of power.”

They also accused some APC leaders of promising positions and financial rewards to defectors, describing the move as a threat to multiparty democracy in the country.
