FRSC Rolls Out Contactless Drivers License System Across Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has unveiled a new contactless biometric system for the issuance of driver’s licenses, introducing a fully digital process aimed at eliminating delays and simplifying vehicle administration in Nigeria.

The announcement came during the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign in Abuja. Themed “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” the campaign seeks to curb accidents and reckless driving that typically rise during the festive period between December 15 and January 15.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the new system would phase out temporary licenses and ensure drivers receive their permanent licenses immediately after biometric capture. He noted that the Corps’ upgraded printing facility now produces up to 15,000 licenses daily, with plans to clear existing backlogs before mid-November 2025.

According to Mohammed, the contactless biometric capture allows applicants to complete the entire process on the spot. Once data is captured, the driver’s license is printed instantly, ending the long wait periods that previously stretched for weeks or months.

The Corps Marshal explained that the initiative was developed in collaboration with state governments and other key stakeholders. He said the system will also integrate driving schools, the Vehicle Inspection Office, and certification processes to ensure a unified and efficient licensing framework.

He added that the digital upgrade reflects global best practices, where licenses are issued immediately upon completion of biometric registration. The contactless feature, he said, reduces physical interaction while maintaining accuracy, speed, and data security.

With this development, the FRSC aims to modernize Nigeria’s driver licensing system, cut bureaucratic bottlenecks, and promote safer, technology-driven road operations ahead of the festive season.
