Lagos PDP Exco Rejects Illegal Congress

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed a factional state congress said to be backed by party elder, Chief Olabode George, describing the exercise as illegal and unconstitutional.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Saturday, State Chairman Philip Aivoji insisted that the tenure of the current executive remains valid until March 2026. He maintained that only the recognised chairman can preside over a state congress, citing the PDP constitution to back his position.

Aivoji warned that the disputed exercise would only deepen divisions within the party. He noted that many loyal members had already expressed frustration and were threatening to leave if the alleged illegality was allowed to stand.

According to him, Lagos was not included in the list of states approved by the PDP National Working Committee for congresses, yet nomination forms were secretly handed to loyalists of a few leaders. He described the move as a calculated attempt to impose new officers and undermine internal democracy.

The state exco distanced itself from the parallel process, accusing organisers of violating party rules and due process. Aivoji stressed that the executive remains committed to peace and unity, but would not be part of what he called a charade.

Also speaking, Lagos Central Vice Chairman Hakeem Olalemi urged party leaders to close ranks and rebuild trust. He said the focus should be on strengthening the party to challenge for power nationally, rather than creating chaos at the state level.

The press briefing was attended by members of the state executive, local government officers, and supporters, who echoed concerns about recurring disputes within Lagos PDP. The crisis over state congresses has been a longstanding issue, with factions trading accusations of manipulation and disregard for the party’s constitution.
