Speaking on a television programme on Monday, Okonkwo argued that outsiders with no direct ties to Rivers were allowed to control the affairs of the state during the crisis. He described the emergency as unnecessary, noting that the political differences between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike could have been resolved internally.

Okonkwo criticized the heavy involvement of figures from outside the state, including national leaders and judicial authorities, in steering Rivers’ political direction at the time. He claimed that this external dominance opened the door for the state’s resources to be mismanaged.

He particularly pointed to a budget of N22 billion earmarked for installing CCTV at the Rivers State Government House, insisting that Ibas should be investigated over how the funds were handled.

The lawyer and Nollywood actor urged Rivers people and other states to learn from the situation, stressing that internal disunity often gives room for external interests to take control and exploit state resources.
