The New Nigeria Peoples Party has distanced itself from the move by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiya Movement to join the All Progressives Congress.

The party’s National Secretary, Dr Ogini Olaposi, said in a statement on Monday in Lagos that the defection plan is solely Kwankwaso’s decision and does not involve the NNPP. He explained that Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had long ceased to be part of the party after he and his loyalists were expelled for anti-party activities.

Olapsosi noted that the party had been vindicated, stressing that any negotiation with Kwankwaso should be treated as an individual matter and not on behalf of the NNPP. He added that the crisis in the party started after the 2023 elections when Kwankwaso allegedly attempted to hijack the structure instead of exiting peacefully.

The secretary recalled that the Memorandum of Understanding between the Kwankwasiya Movement and the NNPP ended after the last general elections. According to him, many of Kwankwaso’s key supporters in Kano had already crossed over to the APC long before now, leaving him without a solid political base.
He maintained that Kwankwaso no longer represents the NNPP and that his political strength had weakened after parting ways with the party. He stressed that any negotiations in the name of the NNPP involving Kwankwaso or his group remain void.
Olapsosi further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to speed up the recognition of the Dr Agbo Major–led executive following a court-ordered convention, saying the delay had prolonged the party’s internal challenges.
