Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed long-standing claims that he attempted to secure a third term while in office, insisting that no one can provide evidence to support the allegation.

Obasanjo spoke in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday during the Democracy Dialogue hosted by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation. He said that although many believed he had such ambitions, he never made such a move nor sought anyone’s support for it.

He argued that achieving debt relief for Nigeria during his tenure was far more difficult than pursuing tenure extension. According to him, if he could secure international debt cancellation, then getting a third term would not have been beyond reach if he had truly wanted it.

The former President warned leaders against clinging to power and considering themselves irreplaceable. He described such behavior as harmful and against divine will, noting that leadership is not meant to be permanent.

He stressed that younger and more energetic leaders are better positioned to drive progress. He said the belief that a nation cannot thrive without a particular individual is dangerous and untrue, as leadership must always evolve.

Obasanjo, who led Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, maintained that true democracy requires transition and renewal, and that no leader should see themselves as the only option for a country’s future.
